James Airey secures cross-party support for his Kendal Northern Development Route plans

Cumbria Conservative Group Leader, James Airey, has today (Thursday 30 November) secured cross-party support for his Northern Development Route proposals in Kendal.

The road will provide much needed relief to the traffic problems in Kendal town centre and improve access to the industrial heartland to the north of the town.

Councillor Airey campaigned hard on the issue during the General Election earlier this year.

Councillor Airey said: “When I met with Secretary of State for Transport, Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP, back at the beginning of the year to outline my plans, it was very clear that a Northern Development Route needed united commitment from local politicians and financial commitment from our local authorities to be able to progress.”

“Following my call for a united front, I have now been able to secure cross-party support at a meeting of the South Lakes Local Committee of Cumbria County Council this morning. My colleagues and I have also put forward enough cash to take this vital project to the next stage.”

“Whilst it is somewhat surprising that the Minister had not received representation on the development of this critical route from our local MP, I am pleased to see that Tim Farron has recently joined my call to make the Northern Development Route a reality.”
